Canada continues to call for an end to violence in Sudan. They stand with the Sudanese people as they work towards peace in their nation. The government recognizes that some Sudanese nationals feel safer in Canada and that they may wish to temporarily extend their stay rather than return home.
On April 24th, 2023, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced that the Canadian government will implement new immigration measures to support Sudanese nationals with temporary residence status who may not wish, or be able to return home due to the rapidly deteriorating situation in their country.
Sudanese Nationals will be able to apply for an extension of their status in Canada allowing them to continue studying, working, or visiting family free of charge. The goal of these measures is to ensure the safety of the Sudanese population within Canada and keep their families together. To facilitate immigration applications for those still in Sudan, the Government of Canada will prioritize the processing of completed temporary and permanent residence applications already in the system. This facilitation also includes visitor visa applications for immediate family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residence holders deemed eligible.
“Canada has a proud and long-standing tradition of providing protection to vulnerable people around the world, and we are deeply concerned for the well-being of people in Sudan, including Canadians and their family members. We are monitoring the situation closely and are working to provide support for those seeking safety in Canada.”
– The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship
