The International Experience Canada (IEC) program will launch in 2023, allowing more international youth to work and travel in Canada. The IEC program provides valuable international work experience, and an opportunity to develop connections and explore new cultures. The IEC is a reciprocal program meaning that Canadian citizens aged 18 to 35 can also work and explore one of over 30 countries and territories.
The program offers three categories of participation: Working Holiday, International Co-op, and Young Professionals. The Working Holiday participants will receive an open work permit enabling them to work for almost any employer in Canada. The International Co-op participants will receive an employer-specific work permit to gain targeted experience in their field of study. Lastly, Young Professionals participants will receive an employer-specific work permit to gain professional work experience that is within their field of study or career path.
The Government of Canada hopes to address the labour shortage in various industries through the IEC program. The IEC not only provides international youth with the opportunity to travel and work in Canada but also gives them the opportunity to develop life-long skills and increases their chances of receiving job prospects in the future.
Applicants can apply as early as January 9, 2023, and processing starts as soon as all required documents are submitted. It is important to note that you cannot apply for a work permit under IEC unless you have received an invitation to apply (ITA).
