Canada reaches a milestone record of welcoming newcomers in 2022

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) doubled the number of applications processed in 2021, processing over 5.2 million citizenship applications and permanent and temporary residence applications in 2022. This serves as a historic milestone in Canada’s history, welcoming a total of 431,645 new permanent residents in a single year.

The IRCC continues to work on welcoming a higher number of newcomers in 2023. The IRCC has improved their system by adding more resources, using new technology, and streamlining application processes by making them available online. The new additions are all significant contributors to improving Canada’s immigration system.

The Government of Canada is also concerned with addressing the labour market shortages and immigration remains a key focus as part of this solution. The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, said, “newcomers play an essential role in filling labour shortages, bringing new perspectives and talents to our communities, and enriching our society as a whole. I am excited to see what the future holds and look forward to another historic year in 2023 as we continue to welcome newcomers.” His vision is promising considering that the International Experience Canada (IEC) program is launching on January 9, 2023, allowing more international youth to work and travel in Canada.
